SCTM awarded for the "Car Free Day" action

At the 54^th International Car Show in Belgrade, the Eco Car of the Year award ceremony was held today - car with the best performance for the environment. Within the framework of the ceremony, the Standing Conference of Towns and Municipalities (SCTM) won a special environmental award for organising the campaign "A day without cars in towns and municipalities". The award is awarded for the eighth year in a row, in cooperation with the Serbian Chamber of Commerce, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Agency for the Safety of Transport of the Republic of Serbia, the Centre for Motor Vehicles - AMSS, the Centre for the Promotion of Sustainable Development, and Metro Market. The prizes were awarded in the presence of Goran Trivan, Minister of Environmental Protection.

The "Car Free Day in towns and municipalities" campaign was held in September 2018 within the European Mobility Week. The campaign was intended to animate the leadership of towns and municipalities to support the principles of sustainable mobility by coming to work without cars (walking, public transport, and bicycle) on 21 September 2018. This initiative was supported by more than 40 leaders of towns and municipalities. In this way, they sent a message that they support initiatives that have an impact on solving problems caused by over-use of cars and vehicles using fossil fuels in general. By giving priority to alternative forms of movement in the town, they indirectly urged citizens to start applying healthier lifestyle habits. "A day without cars in towns and municipalities" was conducted within the framework of the programme "Support to Local Self-Governments in Serbia on the Road to the EU - Second Phase" funded by the Government of Sweden.

Miodrag Gluscevic, Head of Department for Municipal and Urban Planning and Environment, received the award on behalf of the SCTM.

The award given to the Standing Conference of Towns and Municipalities is an acknowledgment to our members, towns and municipalities, i.e. their leaders, mayors and other officials who supported this SCTM initiative and joined the campaign "A day without cars in towns and municipalities" and in that sense, SCTM once again thanks them for their participation and support in this action.
